To say San Diego band The Schizophonics have energy is like saying the Himalayas are just another mountain. They are the K12 of energy level.
Lead singer Pat Beers – is that a perfect name for a band’s front man or what – is a non-stop moving machine. He’s part Mick Jagger, part Elvis Pelvis but the way he leans forward and back with the microphone, spins and effortless drops to the stage doing a split (and getting back up again), he’s mostly like James Brown.
He even does David Bowie tribute shows.
Beers – that’s his wife, Lety behind him on drums; they met at high school in Arizona – is constantly moving non-stop around the during the show, only occasionally bumping into another band member. He pours out so much energy I can picture him passed out in the dressing room afterward, the band waving towels over him in an effort to revive him. Don’t worry, tho, he will be fine by the next set or show.
Formed in 2009, The Schizophonics play all over San Diego and have made albums. In 2014, they were named Best Hard Rock at the San Diego Music Awards. Spotify calls them the “wildest live band in America.”
But nothing can compare to seeing them live in intimate venues such as the legendary Casbah, which is where I first saw them. It’s adrenaline-pumping playing music inspired by Brown, Little Richard, Iggy Pop and Jimi Hendrix.You can’t pause for a second because they are so incredible you don’t want to miss a moment. The energy takes over the room like one of Maverick’s fighter planes in Top Gun.

The show is something else to witness and you never know what – or when – Beers will go into his wild dancing. You find yourself holding up your camera ready to capture the moments but he moves so fast many pictures turn out to be a blur. And sometimes even the videos, too.
There comes a point in time, tho, that you must just put down the phone. It’s like driving the California coast in Big Sur. Eventually, you need to stop taking photos and videos and enjoy what you are seeing.
There are three members in the regular band but I happen to catch them on a special night when musicians filled the stage at the Casbah: a horn section, a mind-blowing keyboardist and a trio of girls in glittered dresses dancing and singing along to the songs.
The word “mindblowing” instantly came to mind that night.
