College students go where the party is and for decades one of the most popular destinations has been Mexico.

But is it safe to go to Mexico for Spring Break? Both the U.S. State Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety says no and have issued warnings to Americans about traveling to Mexico. Part of the reason is the recent kidnapping and killing of two Americans by drug cartels there.

The State Department issued a travel alert for on Monday, stating that spring breakers who do visit Mexico should be wary of crime in the downtown areas of Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum, especially after dark.

Tulum has become a very popular tourist destination for Americans, and not just spring breakers, in recent years. Cancun and Playa del Carmen are long-time spring break destinations. Not going out after dark in those places is hard to avoid considering half the activity of those on spring break takes place at the bars and nightclubs.

For those already in those places, PubClub.com recommends going out only in groups, stay together and watch out after each other. There is always safety in numbers, although nothing in guaranteed.

The area where the Americans were kidnapped, Tamaulipas, has long been an area known to be controlled by drug cartels. It’s not a spring break destination so should not be of concern to spring breakers.

Another big spring break destination is Cabo San Lucas at the southern tip of Baja. Cabo is not under any state department or any other government agency travel warning and since it is largely a small area with tourism comprising nearly its entire economy, is a safe place to be for spring break.
