Is There a Way to Check if a Car’s Odometer Has Been Tampered With?

May 26, 2025 by kevinwilkerson Leave a Comment

You often get more bang for your buck when you go down the used car route. It’s a strategy that usually turns out to be a smart financial move, but it comes with an element of risk.

One of the most common issues is odometer fraud. Odometer tampering, where a vehicle’s mileage is rolled back to appear less used, can mislead buyers into overpaying and unknowingly driving a car that may require costly repairs sooner than anticipated.

Carefully choosing where you buy a used car from is a good way of avoiding any potential problems like an incorrect odometer reading. If you search used cars Sandy, for instance, you will be able to find dealers who thrive on a positive reputation and provide assurances and guarantees to give you peace of mind.

In terms of avoiding being scammed by a false reading, fortunately, there are several ways to detect if an odometer has been altered.

Always carry out due diligence checks

A good starting point would be to check the vehicle’s history report through a service like Carfax, or someone similar.

These reports use data from service visits, title transfers, inspections, and DMV records to log the vehicle’s mileage over time. If the odometer reading on the report suddenly drops between records, or doesn’t line up with what the seller is claiming, it’s a red flag that something isn’t right.

You can also ask the dealer to provide all the documentation required to confirm that a vehicle’s history checks out.

Condition is often a good visual clue

Another good tactic is to take a close look at the vehicle’s condition.

At the end of the day, mileage tends to leave behind physical clues. A car showing 50,000 miles shouldn’t have excessive wear on the steering wheel, pedals, seats, or shifter. If you notice worn upholstery, faded buttons, or a sagging driver’s seat but the odometer reads low, always question the discrepancy.

The condition of the tires can also tell a story. If they’re badly worn but the mileage suggests they should be nearly new, it’s worth digging deeper. Use your gut instincts to dig deeper if something doesn’t look right and the condition is not in line with the purported age and mileage of the car.

The dashboard can provide vital clues

Be sure to examine the dashboard itself. Older analog odometers may show signs of tampering, such as misaligned digits or uneven spacing between numbers. Newer digital odometers are harder to detect physically but can still be manipulated with specialized software.

Be mindful that many modern vehicles store mileage data in multiple systems, and not just in the main instrument cluster. A dealership or qualified mechanic can often access this hidden data using diagnostic tools to see if everything matches.

These suggestions should help you avoid being scammed. However, it is also worth emphasizing that odometer fraud is less common than it once was, but it still happens, particularly when it comes to private sales.

Stay alert, and ask as many questions needed to satisfy any concerns you might have. The good news is that if you buy a used car from a reputable dealer you are highly unlikely to have an issue with a false odometer reading, as they will have done the checks before offering the vehicle for sale.
