San Diego Honors The California Burrito On National Burrito Day On April 2

The California Burrito San Diego
The California Burrito, which contains fries, is a point of pride for San Diego residents.

There are a lots of burritos out there and certainly you can find hundreds of them in San Diego, which is less than 20 miles from the Mexican border.

But there is one in which locals – natives and long-time locals in particular – call their own. And that is the California Burrito. Created here at either Lolita’s Mexican Food in Bonita or Santana’s Mexican Grill in El Cajon, it is contains carne asada, cheddar and french fries rolled up in a flower tortilla. Yes, french fries and for you foodies out there that does indeed sound like a laid-back West Coast take on the iconic Pittsburgh sandwich at Primanti Bros.

At any rate, National Burrito Day is April 2 and San Diego is celebrating it.

El Chingon in the Gaslamp Quarter is offering ts California Burrito for $5.

The Moxy San Diego Downtown/Gaslamp Quarter is renaming the California Burrito to the San Diego Burrito on its lobby bar menu for the day. Participating restaurants across the region will offer special deals on National Burrito Day:

Mention “National Burrito Day” for 10% off a burrito order at The Taco Stand’s location inside Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport

All five Lolita’s Mexican Food locations are offerng a free churro with every San Diego California Burrito.

Puesto is running a Burrito BOGO offer exclusively on DoorDash from April 2 through April 5. Novecientos Grados by Tony Hawk inside Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport is offering a discounted California Burrito.

And while it does not have a Calfornia Burrito, Havana 1920 in the Gaslamp Quarter has a Cuban burrito with lechón, white rice, black beans, Havana cheese blend, and avocado for $16.

These specials and more can be found at SanDiego.org and across SDTA’s social media channels.

New York has its name tied to pizza, Philadelphia has the cheesesteak and Nashville sizzles with hot chicken. And San Diego has the California Burrito — the most iconic handheld in Southern California — and it’s time we celebrate it properly,” said San Diego Tourism Authority President and CEO Daniel Kuperschmid. “National Burrito Day is our moment to remind the world where this iconic dish comes from. While many will debate what goes in a burrito, San Diego has known the answer for decades — carne asada, fries, and a whole lot of hometown pride.”
