Michelob Ultra Beer Garden Is A Refreshing Finish Line Reward
Two days before the annual Super Bowl 10K in Redondo Beach, CA, I made my final training run. I must have been in a really good frame of mind because the minute I stepped out the door, I started sprinting. And I didn’t stop until I covered seven miles.
That’s a far cry from the three miles I was doing just two weeks earlier. I may have nearly worn myself out trying to cram getting in shape – this isn’t exactly a final exam in college – but it apparently worked.
It’s not that running 6.2 miles is a huge deal. Heck, nearly 5,000 people of the 8,000 or so entered in the race do it, too (there’s also a 5K run/walk). But I like to be in at least decent shape for the 10Ks. Otherwise, it’s huffing and puffing going up those grades of the road and, in the case of the Super Bowl 10K, nearly passing out up that steep hill at the Redondo Beach Pier a mile from the finish.
It’s better to be bouncing along, soaking in the scene rather than bowed over trying to catch your breath.
And at the end of this event there’s a beer garden!
And not just any beer garden, but one stocked with Michelob Ultra and some 3,000 of the runners. And since it’s at the end of a 10K and not a marathon, people are moving around and mingling. It’s the best singles scene in the South Bay on Super Bowl Sunday.
Truth be known, it’s really the beer garden why I want to be in 10K shape. I want to be alert, strong and in a good mood when I get into it, and a solid run is the perfect warmup to one of the most fun days on the Beach Cities’ social calendar.
