Singles Life Facts From A Bachelor, The Decorative Fish Edition
Sometimes, I venture off-topic with this blog to write about not about bars and events, but what is in bars and at events. And that, of course, is women and men.
This particular post focuses on household items. Specifically, how they differ from a women’s viewpoint and a man’s viewpoint. Being a man, I’m going to start with our point of view.
When a man buys something for a house or apartment, it is functional. It serves a purpose, it does something. Like a television. We can watch sports on it.
Or a couch. We can sit (and sleep) on it.
If it happens to look nice and even fits in with the other items in the house or apartment, well even better.
When a woman buys something for a house or apartment, it’s decorative. If it happens to serve an actual function, then that’s an unintended bonus.
Which brings me to the fish.
I live with a wonderful female roommate (friends only, just to set a clear picture) who is a decorating star. The house is full of nice little decorative items all over the place. They are on the walls, on mantles, tables and shelves, some of which I actually notice from time to time.
One of the decorative items is a fish that is used to dispense the dishwashing liquid. It is something only a women would buy and here’s why: It’s decorative first and its functionality is of secondary consideration.
A man, of course, would just put the bottle from the store on the counter. How is that more functional, you ask? Simple.
When the supply is getting empty, it’s easy to see this in the bottle. As it gets low you go to the store and get more.
With the fish – and other such decorative items, as girls love these in bathrooms for hand soap, too – you don’t know it’s empty until you push the lever and get a “pffffft” sound.
Now I’m the first to admit the fish looks way better than a plastic bottle.
I just wish it could tell me when it needs more liquid before I’m standing there with a pile of dirty dishes and no way to clean them without going to the store.
