South Bay Beach Cities Nightlife Information, Hot Happenings & Specials
The bar scene in the South Bay Beach Cities of Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach is dynamic, and while it pretty much remains the same it also has subtle changes, like the Pacific Ocean surf, from week to week.
So this blog exists to provide updates on what the bars are doing, any specials they may be running, bands playing at local music venues and the overall party scene of the South Bay. This article is updated on a regular basis to keep readers up to date. This is the report for the weekend of June 9-12.
• FORMER PENNYWISE MEMBER JIM LINDBERG @ SAINT ROCKE. FRIDAY, JUNE 10.
His new band is called The Black Pacific. Also on the calendar are Country Mondays and Surf Roots Thursdays featuring surf/reggae/rock bands and 2-for-1 16-ounce Budweisers.
And this is really cool – starting July 3, the Spazmatics will be playing every Sunday, with 2-for-1 you-call-it drinks until 9 p.m.
Saint Rocke is located at 142 Pacific Coast Highway, Hermosa Beach. Link: www.saintrocke.com/
• OINGO BOINGO COVER BAND AT BRIXTON THIS SATURAY
It’s a dead man’s party, who could ask for more?
For those who want to go Back to School – “hey, that’s what I call Marine Biology!” – then the Oingo Boingo cover band Dead Man’s Party is playing at Brixton on Saturday night. Tickets are just $15. Coming up in the future is an 80s rockin’ flashback with Steel Panther (Gene Simmons loves this band, June 24, $20), a Black Flag tribute band (June 25) and Art Alexakis of Everclear (July 1).
Brixton is located at 100 Fisherman’s Wharf, #J, at the Redondo Beach Pier. Website: www.brixtonsouthbay.com
• THIRSTY THURSDAYS INTRODUCED AT UNDERGROUND PUB
This is a remarkable deal: Buy a 22-oz mug for $1 and fill it for $3 for Bud/Bud Light or $4 for Stella. Bring it back on Thursdays and repeat. 5-10 p.m.
• SHARKEEZ UPPER MANHATTAN HAS BANDS ON SUNDAY NIGHTS
It’s a Harry O’s flashback (long-time locals can relate to the reference) in the ‘ol Harry O’s. There’s bands at what is now Sharkeez Upper Manhattan on Sundays. Bands play 5-8 p.m., and there are drink specials all day. Some drinks are just a buck (Bud Light drafts, for example), from 8-10 p.m.
Sharkeez Upper Manhattan – a.k.a., the “new” Manhattan Sharkeez – is located at 3600 Highland Ave.
• SHARI PUORTO PLAYS SAGEBRUSH CANTINA
Yeah, it’s out of the South Bay, but here’s a good reason to head up the 101; our local singer Shari “El” Puorto” is playing the famous Sagebrush Cantina on Friday. She starts belting out the blues at 9 p.m., and there is no cover charge.
Sagebrush Cantina is located 23527 Calabasis Road.
And here a good reason to go up there the following weekend. The annual Calabasis Malibu Food & Wine Festival is Saturday, June 18. Here is PubClub.com’s review, and you had better get tickets in advance.
June 25-26, Shari will also be much closer to home at the Riviera Village Summer Festival in Redondo Beach. This is Redondo’s version of Fiesta Hermosa and yes, there is a beer garden. Event website.
• PATRICK MOLLOY’S SUMMER SPECIALS
The party on the Pier includes Molloy’s, which has live music by Wise and $1 beers on Fridays, ladies night on Wednesdays (girls in groups of five receive drink specials and half-priced bottles of wine, plus a free appetizer, 6-close), and half off all “Irish items” on Wednesdays. Be sure and check out the cool new nerf basketball goal by the back side of the bar.
• SUNDAY NIGHT HAPPY HOUR AT MANHATTAN FISHBAR
The food is fantastic (the clam chowder is the best food bargain in town at $2.95 for a cup) and now there’s a Happy Hour on Sunday nights. It’s the Monday-Friday Happy Hour, half off beer, wine and drinks (5-7 p.m.,) on Sunday nights after 9 p.m. The Mai Tai is the bar’s specialty drink, and it’s good and potent.
Here’s a great review of the FishBar.
FishBar is located in the original Sharkeez at 3800 Highland Ave.
• SIGN UP FOR SMACKFEST
The crazy coed volleyball tournament, set for July 23 in Hermosa Beach, is taking applications for teams. The city is limiting the number of teams this year and it will sell out, so if you want to play, sign up soon.

• TACO TUESDAYS (AND NOT ONLY ON TUESDAYS)
Who has the best in town!? There’s Taco Tuesday specials at Sharkeez (Hermosa and Manhattan), OB’s (very popular among locals, photo above), and The Underground. Yes, plenty of choices. But did you know that Taco Tuesday actually goes beyond Tuesday?
The original South Bay Taco Tuesday, in fact, is on Wednesday. It’s at the North End on the Hermosa/Manhattan border at what locals refer to as Five Points. When the place was called Critters, it was on Tuesday but the softball team the team sponsored played the next night, so it was switched to Wednesdays. And that’s where it remains today. Tacos are $1.25 each and walk into the kitchen to order at this very casual bar.
There’s also a Taco Thursday. Ercoles, which has a fantastic burger special on Wednesdays, has three tacos for $5 on Thursdays (also on Tuesdays).
WEEKEND ROAD TRIPS
