College Party Towns: In Tuscaloosa, AL the Innisfree Is the National Championship of College Bars
Like any good ‘ol college own, there are several good bars in Tuscaloosa, AL.
There’s the famous Houndstooth sports bar, Buffalo Phil’s Pub and Cafe (known for wings but a PubClub.com Bar Blogger’s favorite near campus), Brewer’s Corner and Chuck’s downtown (the latter with a funky disco band in full Saturday Night Fever attire) the Bear Trap, the dive Egans, even the Campus Party Store (beers to go, okay to walk around campus with them on game day).
But nothing is as grand as the Innisfree in downtown T-Town. Technically, it’s the Innisfree Irish Pub, but about the only Irish thing about the place is that a lot of beer drinking takes place in it.
It’s best night is Thursday because it’s crowded but you can actually get into the place without being Nick Saban or paying a healthy cover charge (hey, for a college student, $10 is a healthy cover charge). There’s also a bit of elbow – and, more importantly, conversation – room. Especially on that large outdoor patio, which is almost like being on the Quad for the pre-game tailgate party.
It also has two indoor rooms with students squeezing in between each other to shout out drink orders to the bartenders.
With LSU and the Crazy Cajuns coming to T-town every place will be rocking. There are two nightlife areas, “the Strip” just beyond the frat houses and Bryant-Denny Stadium, and all places will be packed (the sororities, for those visiting curious souls, are on the other side of the stadium behind the end zone).
Tuscaloosa, a town of about 75,000 and the University of Alabama, with about 20,000 students, will grow by three times that much for the #1 vs. #2 matchup between the Crimson Tide and Bengal Tigers. It will be the World’s Biggest Party on the weekend of Nov. 5.
When it comes to tailgating, here’s PubClub.com’s game day party guide.
