Unique Annual Competition A Great Start To LA’s Independence Day
It’s nuts, crazy fun and also harmless. A few hundred people participate and a few more come and watch. The climax is when the winners – male and female – are hoisted on the shoulders of others and carried around a mosh pit. A punk band then plays and it’s wild and crazy for about an hour.
Then everyone goes to the post-event gathering at the North End bar in Hermosa Beach until the Strand starts to heat up with its buzzing activity and house parties.
Every year, the cops watch from on the top of horses (yes, horses!), leaves everyone alone and everything is always fine from a wildness and troublemaking standpoint.
It’s actually become somewhat of a media circus more than an actual event circus.
The Ironman begins at 8, the beer drinking and mosh pit starts about 9:30 (which is when most spectators arrive) and it’s all done by around 10:30. The parties on The Strand start to crank up at about 2 p.m.
