Bands, Comedians & Movies In August In Change From Traditional Month-Long Events
There is more than one change besides a new promoter for the 2019 Hermosa Beach Summer Concert Series.
Traditionally held on each Sunday afternoon in August, a new format has events taking place on just two weekends, although each is a two-day affair with shows on Saturday as well as Sunday.
The dates are Aug. 17 & 18 and Aug. 24 & 25. The new promoter is 5B Artists + Media and the event’s official name is the Hermosa Beach Summer Series presented by KROQ. The concerts, which start at 5 and go until sunset, are free to attend and generally have people spreading out on the sand with blankets in a picnic-style environment.
Headlining Saturday, Aug. 17, is Billboard chart-topping Australian alternative rock band Atlas Genius which scored a major radio hit with the track “Trojans.” Actor/comedian Jamie Kennedy (MTV, Scream, “Malibu’s Most Wanted”) will perform a stand-up set alongside LA indie rockers The Wrecks, alternative locals Kitten and OC’s Your Favorite Color. Live performances will be followed by a beachside showing of the cult film “North Shore,” presented by Hermosa Beach Friends of the Parks.
The next day, LA rockers Iglu & Hartly; Columbus, Ohio pop rock trio The Orphan The Poet; and LA rock band The Jacks takes the stage on the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier.
The headliner the following Saturday, Aug. 24, is The White Buffalo, which has performed at numerous music festivals around the world, including Bonnaroo. Pounded By The Surf and Trapdoor Social will provide instrumental alternative surf music. The comedian is Steve Byrne (“Sullivan & Son”, Comedy Central, Chappelle’s Show). A movie (title TBD) will follow the concert.
The summertime concert series ends on Sunday, Aug. 25 with headliner Mariachi El Bronx, an indie band that has played Coachella along with reggae band Wailing Souls and rockabilly band Gamblers Mark.
The event will also have food trucks and – get this – a craft beer garden east of The Strand.
