One Of The Top South Bay Events Scheduled To Return In July
The crazy, costumed, team-themed beach volleyball tournament known as Smackfest is back on the South Bay social calendar.
Canceled last year due to COVID-19, the event has a date for 2021 at the pier in Hermosa Beach, CA.. It is scheduled for Saturday, July 31.
Smackfest – as pretty much everyone in the Beach Cities knows except for newbies – is one of the top annual events in the South Bay. This all-day event is comprised of dozens of teams competing in a beach volleyball tournament south of the Hermosa Beach Pier. It is free for spectators to attend.
The teams are coed and comprised of weekend recreational players and top amateurs. There is a pro division, as well. The whole idea for the vast majority of players is not to win or even advance to the playoffs but to combine the two main social aspects of the area, something PubClub.com describes as “exercise and socialize.”
To achieve this, they create themes for their teams and dress and play in costumes. They set up tents on the beach and when they are not playing, run into Sharkeez for drink specials provided by the tournament director.
A few of the themes from past include: the Price Is Right (complete with the big spin wheel), lifeguards and bikini girls, Running With The Bulls, pilots and stewardesses and hula dancers.
All of this is accented by a DJ pumping fun party tunes, sponsor tents giving away merchandise and even reporters from PubClub TV (check out the video!).
Other Smackfest Events hot happenings scheduled for 2021 are:
• Sat. 8/28 – Event TBD
• Sat 9/25 – Smacktoberfest Volleyball + Beer/Wine Event
• Sat. 10/23 – Hackfest Golf Tournament
