FOOD & DRINK FESTIVALS IN L.A.
• Food Bowl
May 1-31
All Over L.A.
Hundreds of food events across the city.
CINCO DE MAYO IN L.A.
Friday, May 5

This is not the Mexican Revolution celebration but, well, some drinking day for Gringos in states like California and cities like Los Angeles that are close to Mexico.
There’s no real big, single party location but all over Los Angeles people pour into Mexican-style cantinas for margaritas, mariachi bands and cervezas. One of the top places is Pancho’s in Manhattan Beach, which actually has a mariachi band playing on the sidewalk. Inside, it’s shoulder-to-shoulder packed in the small cantina with the house band (rock cover tunes). You had better get there by 5.
KENTUCKY DERBY PARTIES IN L.A.
Saturday, May 6

The Running Of The Roses may take place in Louisville, but guys like to put on their nice threads and girls big hats and stylish sun dresses for somewhat upscale – but more fun – Kentucky Derby parties. There’s two in the South Bay.
• Shade Hotel
Manhattan Beach & Redondo Beach
Cost; Free
The e bars at these two upscale (but beach friendly) hotels turn into a Derby party with temporary TVs set up and a very well-dressed and good-looking crowd filling the entire space. The event is free and a bar flows with draft beers, cocktails and especially Mint Juleps. Starts at noon.
• Manhattan Country Club
Manhattan Beach
Cost: $45
Saint Rocke and Berry Bly have combined to put on this party that features the Derby on 10 TVs, a live crooner and lounge-style DJ music. Expect a large contingent of South Bay singles. Expect a lot of socializing and Mint Juleps. Be sure and dress the part – this is no beach clothes-and-sandals event. A two-course brunch with a glass of champagne to start the day is also available ($75). People who went last year have been talking for a month about how great it was and are eager to go again in this year.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND IN L.A.
• Fiesta Hermosa
Hermosa Beach
Cost: Free
A three-day festival at the beach with 5o+ vendors, rock tribute bands playing on a stage a the pier (note, you must be in a bar to drink) and a small-ish beer garden, often with “the more you drink the better they sound” bands.
• Topanga Days
Topanga Canyon
Cost: $25
A low-key music and “hang out” festival in this area that seems to be stuck in its hippies 70 cultural past. Bands include Jefferson Starship (Saturday) and Venice (Monday afternoon).

GREAT DATE EVENTS IN LOS ANGELES IN MAY
• Queen Mary Salon Series
May 4
Cost: Free
In need of a great date place, something out of the ordinary that will impress the date and entertain you? Then step aboard one of LA’s least recognized tourist attractions, the Queen Mary, for a night of a true La La Land experience.
The Queen Mary’s Salon Series features Sweden’s Queen of Swing Gunhild Carling, along with members of the Royal Crown Revue (which is often credited with birthing the Swing Revival Movement), and others playing swing, Jazz and Dixieland. There are three sets running from 5:30-7:30 p.m., and get this – it’s free!
Admission to the ship is complimentary after 3 p.m. (it’s normally $27) and parking is reduced to $10. PubClub suggests arriving at around 4, getting a glass of wine from the wine tasting room and walking around the ship and on her decks before the show. Cocktails and snacks are available during the performances.
