At a time when some Los Angeles historic restaurants are disappearing – Cole’s French Dip just announced it is shutting its doors after 128 years and the Original Pantry closed last March tho a new version is scheduled to reopen this year – some remain strong.
One is San Pedro Fish Market, a waterfront landmark restaurant, and it has turned 70 this year. Founded on Good Friday in 1956, the family-owned institution has grown from a humble seafood stand into an internationally recognized culinary landmark.
“Seventy years is an incredible milestone, and it speaks to the strength of our family, our team and the community that has supported us since day one,” said Michael Ungaro, CEO and Owner of San Pedro Fish Market. “As we celebrate this anniversary, we also take a moment to honor the life and legacy of our co-owner and visionary, Tommy Amalfitano, who helped build San Pedro Fish Market from the ground up. From opening our doors on Good Friday in 1956 to welcoming new generations of guests today, our mission has always been the same—to serve the best seafood possible and create a place where memories are made.”
Throughout the year San Pedro Fish Market will commemorate its anniversary with special programming and community events. It invites guests to share favorite memories on social media by tagging @SanPedroFish and including #70thAnniversary for the chance to win an exclusive, limited edition 70th Anniversary coin which is good for skipping the line at The Landing in San Pedro for one year.

San Pedro Fish Market began as a small operation called Vista Seafood, opened by Mackey Ungaro alongside his son Henry and nephew Tommy Amalfitano and quickly became a gathering place for locals drawn to the freshest catch and warm, family-style hospitality. Through the years,it evolved alongside the harbor itself, relocating to the waterfront, anchoring the iconic Ports O’ Call Village and ultimately emerging as the San Pedro Fish Market.
Now in its fourth generation of family leadership, San Pedro Fish Market has become synonymous with Southern California seafood culture. The restaurant’s World Famous Shrimp Tray has earned national acclaim and helped secure its spot among the top ten most Instagrammed restaurants in the United States, drawing visitors from around the world to the San Pedro waterfront.
As the brand celebrates its 70th anniversary, San Pedro Fish Market continues to look toward the future while honoring its past. With its long-term presence secured in the Port of Los Angeles through a 49-year lease in the forthcoming West Harbor development, the iconic seafood destination remains committed to elevating its waterfront experiences and serving the community it has called home for seven decades.
