Beer & Margarita Specials, Great Tacos & The 10 Taco Challenge

Some places have surf ‘n turf.
But nothing is ordinary Manhattan Beach, CA, the beachside community in LA’s South Bay. Here, once ever week, it’s surf and tacos.
One of the best Taco Tuesday specials is here in Manhattan Beach.
It’s Taco Tuesday, a ritual as regular as the tides, as much a part of the local culture as biking and rollerblading on the Strand and weekend pick-up beach volleyball games.
This is as local as local gets in the vast wonderland that is Los Angeles. It’s kicked-back, laid-back and put-’em-back. The spot is OB’s Pub and Grill, a small restaurant and bar in North Manhattan Beach (on Highland, just south of Rosecrans (3610 Highland, to be specific).

For those thinking “LA scene bar,” forget it. This is a beach bar. In fact, it’s name is from its original owner, USC All-American volleyball player Steve Obradovich, whose nickname was, appropriately enough, OB. (For a long while he also ran the most popular bar after USC football games, Julie’s, by the Coliseum. PubClub.com was there quite few times!)
Today, OB’s is all about the tacos on Tuesday. Here’s the scoop: they are $2 each and come in beef, chicken, carne and fish. By far the most popular are the beef tacos, which are really steak marinated in a delicious, spicy sauce that has even weekly regulars salivating. “These tacos are SO awesome!,” they consistently remark.

Now, for some people, two tacos is just the appetizer, for the bar has a 10 Taco Challenge. This is something that Man vs. Food would likely fail, for it involves eating 10 of the huge tacos in a single seating (there is no time limit, except to finish by closing time and bathroom visits are supervised).
Accomplish the goal, as about a hundred have over the years – including several ladies – and get your name on a plaque and a free T-shirts. Plus, of course, the great sense of accomplishment and a loud applause from everyone else in the bar.
OB’s is a small one-room bar and is so popular that there is often a wait for a table. So grab a drink and just wait for something to open. (Tip: Arriving by 6:30 increases the chances of getting a table.)
The specials run from lunch until 10 p.m.
It is far less crowded on other nights of the week and makes up the best siirfry in town ($1 off on Wednesdays) and good breakfasts on weekends (Sundays, all drinks are $1 off all day and night.)
Sometimes, you’ve got to do shots after tacos and beer.
Address: OB’s is located at 3610 Highland Ave., Manhattan Beach, CA. Ths is north Manhattan Beach, next to Sharkeez, across from Pancho’s and just south of Rosecrans. Parking is on the street or a small lot across Rosecrans (meters operate until 9 p.m.).
