The date is Feb 13 which is, of course, Super Bowl Sunday.
The price is $40 for each the 10K run, the 5K run/walk, and Baby Buggy 10K. A new category includes both the 5K and 10K runs for $60.
The Super Bowl 10K is the top winter event in the Beach Cities, an open street party of sorts with more than 7,000 people participating, many dressed in costumes. One traditional group are the salmons “swimming” upstream; they do the run in reverse fashion.
Afterward, everyone meets in the beer garden for the two (or more if you’re savvy) beers.
That’s a nice reward after running what is really a challenging course. Much of it is a slow, uphill climb with no hill as challenging as the one up from the pier and back onto Catalina Ave. That one leaves people huffing and puffing.
Fortunately, that is near the end of the race and from there it’s a downhill run to the finish line.
The event starts and finishes on Harbor Drive in front of Seaside Lagoon, which is where the beer garden is located.
Most years, the weather is warm and sunny. It starts out cool but soon many people shed their long-sleeve tees for short sleeves.
Then it’s onto Super Bowl parties and the bars, at least for many of the South Bay’s singles, who use the 10K as their starting point for a full, fun day.
