Hermosa Beach Ironman, The Strand, House Parties & The Redondo Beach Fireworks Information
In an area of legendary house parties, The Strand and the unique Ironman competition, all capped off by fireworks over the Pacific Ocean, the 4th of July in the Los Angeles South Bay Beach Cities is one full day and night of activities.
And parties. After all, half the South Bay’s population is single. Here’s everything you need to know about the 4th in Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach & Redondo Beach for this All-American national holiday.
The 4th of July is on a Thursday in 2019.
The Hermosa Beach Ironman Information
The 4th of July in the South Bay begins with this unique event in which a couple hundred people gather on the beach in Hermosa at 8 o’clock in the morning to – get this – run a mile, paddle a mile in the ocean, then kill a six-pack of beer. They are timed and even have beer judges to make sure they drink all their beer. Then the participants celebrate by running around a mosh pit while a punk band plays on the sounds. Spectators are welcome and the cops will even turn their heads if you pop a beer. But they are watching you, too.
Hermosa Beach On The Fourth Of July
If this were four or five years ago, PubClub would be writing about how this is the best party place in America to celebrate the 4th. It was house after house after house having parties along The Strand, the string broken only by several block parties on the walk streets. Today, while there are still fun house parties, there’s only about a dozen really big ones. And you had better know someone at them to go to them. (Unless you’re a hot girl in a revealing red, white and blue bikini, of course).
Still, it’s a good scene but don’t be a fool or blatantly drink in public, for not only is every Hermosa Beach cop on duty, so, too, are officers from surrounding cities and even several cops on horseback from the LA Sheriffs Dept. If only they would clean up after their horses!
Manhattan Beach On The Fourth Of July
Once the mecca of the South Bay’s 4th of July parties – in particular 1300 The Strand – Manhattan Beach is now mostly quiet. About all you’ll find are a few people on the decks of houses on The Strand for mostly quiet house gatherings.
Redondo Beach Fourth Of July Fireworks
The South Bay’s fireworks are launched by the Redondo Beach Pier and can be seen from all three Beach Cities, as well as Palos Verdes. They start at 9 p.m., and are set to patriotic music, if you’re close enough to hear the music.
Drinking In Public On The Fourth Of July
It is against California law to have open containers in public. This includes on the beach. And there are certainly enough police to enforce it. Mostly, the officers are not wanting to needless harass anyone and may just ask you to pour it out rather than giving you a ticket, which cost several hundred dollars. They also do not want to arrest anyone but will in a heartbeat if you’re causing any trouble.
Driving/Parking In The South Bay On The Fourth Of July
Parking in the Hermosa Beach on the 4th is next to impossible. There are paid lots at the Redondo Pier but go early in the afternoon well before the fireworks. You may get lucky and find street parking in neighborhoods but read the signs and pay attention to the meters (the yellow poles are 24 hours in Hermosa). So take Uber or Lyft or better yet, ride a bike – that’s the best way to get up and down The Strand.
