The hoofs meet the dirt again in November where the “turf meets the surf” as the Breeder’s Cup returns to San Diego’s famous horse racing track for 2024.
The event is scheduled for Nov. 1-2. It will be the third time Del Mar, founded by singer Bing Crosby in 1937, will have hosted the event, which is a series of 14 races to determine the world champion horses, jockeys and trainers. The total purse is mmore than $31 million.” Del Mar last previously hosted the Breeder’s Cup in 2021.
The 2023 Breeder’s Cup is also in Southern California, at LA’s Santa Anita Park from Nov. 3-4.
‘This is the perfect place to do it,” Joe Harper, Director, President & CeO of Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. “It’s a good feeling for it to come back.”
Del Mar’s 2023 Opening Day, which PubClub.com describes as “The Kentucky Derby of the West Coast” – and it is quite the social scene – is July 21. That’s a Friday; traditionally Opening Day is on a Wednesday.
Del Mar has a rich history and because of Crosby’s Hollywood connections, several of his friends would come down for the races from L.A. They included Marlyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Elizabeth Taylor, Charlie Chaplin and Red Skeleton. Seabiscuit raced there just two years after its opening.
