Kentucky Derby Of The West Coast Opens On A Saturday

The 2021 date for Del Mar Opening Day – the Kentucky Derby Of The West Coast – as we call it on PubClub.com – has been set. And it’s a little different than in traditional years.
It is July 17, which is on a Saturday. Now as just about everyone in San Diego knows, Opening Day is traditionally on a Wednesday.
The summer racing season runs thru Sept. 6, which is Labor Day. The shorter fall season is Nov. 3-28.
As of this posting, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has not announced any details about Opening Day or the rest of the summer schedule.

And that includes whether or not there will be fans at a full or limited capacity as well as the usual side attractions, most notably the hat contest on Opening Day and the post-racing concerts during the summer season.
PubClub.com will post this information when it is made available by the DMTC.
When it is at its full gallop, Del Mar Opening Day is one of the top annual social events in San Diego. Some 50,000 people turn out for it, with the women dressed in their stylish dresses and fashionable Derby hats, with the men in their best Charlie Harper bowling shirts and even some in suits with horses on the jacket.
It is a social scene that is sought out by singles and couples throughout the area. But with the COVID-19 situation still uncertain and vaccines being administered but hardly reaching all San Diego residents, it is far from a sure bet that the 2021 event will be like traditional years.
