While that’s not unusual for a normal weekend night, this one is different because on Saturday, March 12, its the annual ShamROCK St. Patrick’s-themed block party. For 10 hours, the streets are blocked off for a rockin’ party that involves bands, Irish step dancing and other entertainment, a pub crawl and lots of green beer.
The event takes place from 2 p.m.-midnight, on 5th & 6th avenues between Market & E Street. It draws in more than 15,000 people.
There are seven bands, highlighted by the Young Dubliners. Additionally there are Irish step dancers, DJs and, naturally, lots of green beer.
Additional entertainment involves an Irish Jig Off, Unicorn races, musical chairs, a streamer relay, a stein-holding contest and something called a Shenanigan Showdown at the Clover Stage. This is a 21-and-over party.
Tickets include discount drinks at participating bars. And of course you can’t get into the bars within the event – such as The Field – without being at the block party.
