San Diego Gaslamp bar and restaurant El Chingon is hosting a taco eating contenst on Fat Tuesday, which is Feb. 13.
One may not normally associate tacos with Mardi Gras but Fat Tuesday derives its name because people “fatten up” before giving up things (such as food) for Lent, literally using all the fats in the home before Lent in preparation for fasting and abstinence.
So a taco eating contest is not that far off base.
Called The Ultimate Taco Challenge, it will will pit teams against each other and the clock to eat 42 tacos within four minutes and 20 seconds. The team that completes the challenge first will win an El Chingon gift card, plus a bottle of Don Julio 1942, a very coveted prize. A bottle of Don Julio 1942 sells for $250 and up as it is produced in small batches and aged for a minimum of two and a half years,
Teams interested in participating must have four people and may enroll here. Check-in for the contest starts at 5:30 p.m., while the challenge begins at 7 p.m.
