
While rum is often thought of as a Caribbean or Florida thing and San Diego is more of a tequila town, it would be foolish to think you can’t get a good tropical drink in this city.
To prove it, several bar/restaurants are acknowledging National Rum Day (Aug. 16) with special rum drinks and one is even having an event with free rum tastings and appetizers beforehand.
Havana 1920 in the Gaslamp Quarter is starting things by having Havana Nights on Thursday, Aug. 14. This event features complimentaryrum tastings and tray-passed Cuban bocadito as well as live Latin music. Admission is free, with advance registration here.
Then on Satureday, the bar features the BVI’s legendary Painkiller drink made with Pusser’s Rum, orange juice, house-made coconut cream and pineapple juice, with the choice of strength from level one to level three; the Hotel Nacional, made with Diplomático Planas white rum, fresh pineapple juice, fresh lime juice, apricot liqueur and R&D Aromatic #7 bitters. The price is $12 . It also has the El Presidente, a blend of Bacardí Cuatro rum, blue Curaçao, Noilly Prat dry vermouth and house-made grenadine, priced at $12. Guests can also enjoy creative twists on classic cocktails like an Espresso Martini or Old Fashioned, both reimagined with rum and priced at $15 each.
The Pool House at the Pendry hotel has the Passion Berry Mojito, made with Sonrisa rum, raspberry, mint, lime and soda, priced at $18; and the Skinny Mojito, crafted with Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum, Perrier sparkling water, mint, agave and lime, priced at $19 per glass or $75 per pitcher.
Mezé Greek Fusion, located at 345 Sixth Ave., shakes up a trio of rum cocktails including the Bye Felicia, made with Bacardi mango chile rum, agave, fresh lime and Tajín, priced at $17; the Caribbean Queen, a mix of Bacardi Añejo Cuatro rum, Campari, pineapple, lime, orgeat and R&D bitters, priced at $17; and the Cucumber Ouzijto, a combination of RumHaven coconut rum, cucumber, ouzo, mint, lime and sparkling water for $15.
