Over-The-Line, Smackfest & Mooning Of the Amtrak All Happen On One Hot Day

It’s hot in Southern California in July and not just because of the weather.
The second weekend – July 14 – is sizzling for another reason. It’s a huge time for some major party events, which for the single people is nothing but fun, fun, fun.
Two of the biggest party events in Southern California are taking place on the 14th, the opening day of the Over-The-Line tournament in San Diego and Smackfest in Hermosa Beach.
They are two hours apart, the only problem being you can’t do both in the same day.
But that’s not all. The 14th is also the Mooning of the Amtrak in Laguna Niguel. And, for those with a private plane (or if you know someone with a private plane) there’s a fly-in taking place at the Lompoc airport.
The OTL opening day is the biggest party. This is a softball-type tournament taking place o Fiesta Island by Mission Bay in north San Diego that involved teams with names we can’t print here and all all-out, hold-nothing-back party scene.
Not only can you drink in public in this day, you can buy drinks from pop-up bars. Tens of thousands of people – many of them the hot girls and studly dudes of San Diego – are walking around in bikinis and board shorts. This event is so crowded, you have to take a shuttle to get onto the island. Some 10,000 people are at the OTL, which also continues on Sunday and also into the following weekend.
Smackfest is similar with the exception that the sport is beach volleyball. Teams are in costumes, there’s a DJ and people running into and out of the host bar Sharkeez to get properly fueled up for the day’s festivities (there is no drinking on the beach for this event).
The Mooning of the Amtrak is just that – people running to drop their shorts at the passing train. The host bar is a dive called Mug’s Away Saloon and while it’s no longer the crazy event it once was with motorhomes lined up along the street, the scene at the bar is a pretty lively one.
All three events are open and free for the public to attend.
