Oahu Restaurant & Bar Best Known For Its Potent Mai Tais

If you want to get buzzed on Mai Tais in Hawaii, you can certainly do that at the Royal Hawaiian bar on Waikiki Beach.

They are so potent that they have broken them down into two categories, the “tourist” version or the “Old School,” the latter only for Mai Tai and rum veterans.

The Three Mai Tai Limit

But there’s another place on the island of Oahu that makes even more intoxicating Mai Tais. It’s Buzz’s Original Steakhouse and you get so buzzed, they will only serve you three of them.

Located off Kailua Beach in Kailua across the street from Kailua Beach Park, (there’s also a location in Pearl City) this is a buzzing little joint filled with locals. It’s part tiki bar, part old-school restaurant serving lunch and dinner. And right across from a beautiful beach.

This is really a restaurant first and not a bar, so unlike the Royal Hawaiian, you don’t necessarily go in there for off-the-beach drinks. You go there for a burger or, at night, ribs or a big steak, and wash it down with a pair of super-strong Mai Tais.

And it’s good that’s the case, because even for veterans, the Mai Tai will get the brain floating around in the head. It’s eyelid-flashing, sit-back-in-the-chair, “whoa” strong.

Plus, since you’re on the other side of the island from Waikiki Beach (and be sure someone else is driving)  this is not a hangout place.

But it’s a very cool place, and a spot that’s very popular with locals in the know and the occasional tourist. It’s true indoor-outdoor dining in that there’s an actual tree growing inside the dining room.

And the Mai Tai ($10) is only one rum-packed cocktail; there’s a full menu of tropical drinks.
