Summer Event Features Raffle With Big Prizes and Cheap Beer
Waikiki has Duke’s on Sunday.
Malibu has Duke’s on Wednesday.
At the former, it’s a tradition so rich it even brings in locals to the beach’s top tourist bar. At the latter, it’s a place to hang loose with locals, enjoy cheap beer and win some darned good prizes. It’s Big Wednesday and it’s an annual summertime special that runs from the end of June to the middle of August.
Big Wednesday consists of two hours of raffles in the back bar from 7-9 p.m., and the prizes include a bucket of goodies from Bud Light, beach umbrellas (the Bar Blogger won both of these the first night!), high-end watches and sunglasses, coolers, hats and t-shirts. Tickets are $2 each, or $15 for 20, $80 for 100. The items are donated by sponsors and all the money goes directly to Malibu charities.
Even better, the bar specials are rolling like the waves: $3 Bud Lights, $4 Kona Longboard Lagers and $6 margaritas and tequila shots.
Big Wednesday takes place in the scenic back bar where waves occasionally crash right into the glass windows. Bam! It starts to get pretty crowded by about 8. The final event on Wednesday, Aug. 17, moves to the banquet room and includes a live band performance.
All the raffle tickets purchased up to that point on the previous Wednesdays are put into the draw on the final night. So save the tickets that did not net prizes, for they could still be big winners.
Last year’s Big Wednesday raised more than $15,000 for local charities.
Duke’s is located at 21150 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu. (310) 317-0777.
Parking is $4 in the lot or free if you can find one of the few spots along PCH.
