The Hennessey’s Paddleboard Competition Showcases the Unique Combination of An LA Sport and A Post-Event Party

One such example is demonstrated the second Saturday of July in Redondo Beach. It’s the Hennessey’s Paddleboard Competition and it involves hard physical exertion in the Pacific Ocean surf, eight miles of paddling while sitting, squatting or standing on a long surfboard.
It’s a demanding sport that tests the endurance of the minds and bodies of nearly 100 competitors. Paddleboarding, like surfing and beach volleyball, is something locals take to as kids, like the Swiss to skiing.
But, in the culture of the beach, it’s not all games. There’s also fun, and for the paddleboarders that means heading up the hill after the competition to a parking lot adjacent to HT Grill – a restaurant owned by the beach bar Hennessey’s – for a post-event party. In fact, it’s a beer garden complete with flowing Budweiser and Bud Light drafts, a band, prizes and even mojitos.
Everyone in the community is welcome to join the festivities because, well it’s the beach. And it’s a party.
