Billy Joel, Dave Matthews Band And B.B. King Top Second Week Performers

Normally, the second week of New Orleans JazzFest is the best one for hearing the biggest-name bands.
But not this year.
The lineup on the first weekend far outpaces that of the second, at least in early March.
Billy Joel, the Dave Matthews Band and B.B. King all play on Saturday or Sunday, April 27-28. By contrast, about all the next weekend counters with is Fleetwood Mac on May 4. Now certainly, Fleetwood Mac at JazzFest is great, but at this time there’s no other big-name bands that get me exited. Daryl Hall and John Oates? I think not.
There is Willie Nelson (and family) on Friday the 3rd, but Fridays are always a stretch for going to JazzFest. There are not nearly as many people and frankly, JazzFest is the party that it is because of the weekends.
Sunday’s first week is the best day of them all. In addition to Dave Matthews and B.B. King, it also has the Gypsy Kings and a personal favorite, Better Than Ezra.
It’s possible – likely, even – that more bands will be added in the coming weeks. Often the biggest names, Jimmy Buffett comes quickly to mind, don’t commit until a couple of months before they perform.
So if you’re going to JazzFest, I recommend going for the first week.
JazzFest 2013 is April 26-28 and May 2-4.
