Erin Go Brah Without Worrying About Bracket Busters

Normally, on St. Patrick’s Day Weekend in the States, we’ve got one eye on our beer and the other on the TVs in the bars.
That’s because, in addition to all the great fun that is St. Paddy’s Day and the super-fun spirit everyone has in the bars, it’s also the opening weekend of March Madness.
That’s the absolutely insane event where 64 teams get knocked down to 16 in four furious days as part of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Everyone, even those who know nothing about basketball and who haven’t watched a game since this time last year, fills out a bracket in a pool and each year there are maddening upsets that bust those brackets like a sledgehammer to a crystal vase.
It’s the most exciting and frustrating time in all of sports.
And that first weekend falls around the time of St. Patrick’s Day, so while we’re at parades we’re checking our smart phones for scores and when we’re at the bars we’re watching games. That’s as bagpipe bands roll through the bars, as we sing along to those great songs we associate with St. Patrick’s Day – “Seven Drunken Nights,” “Dirty Old Town” and by the way, who the (you know what) is Alice!? – and we drink beer as if it were water after a sweaty workout.
But not in 2013, because March Madness does not start until the following weekend. That means St. Patrick’s Day will be all about St. Patrick’s Day. In fact, it’s a full St. Paddy’s Weekend, because St. Paddy’s Day is on a Sunday.
And oh, how I wish I were back in Savannah, Ga., for it, for it’s going to be a madhouse in that sweet Southern city!
