Orlando Tops Top Least Desirable NYE Cities
I could not help myself.
When I received a press release from WalletHub about “Best Places To Spend New Year’s Eve” it included Orlando. At #2 behind New York City, no less.
Orlando!? Hey, I’ve been to Orlando for New Year’s Eve. I was there covering a bowl game when I worked at a newspaper and can tell you most most definitely it is just the opposite of a “best place” to be on NYE. A friend and I drove around for more than an hour looking for a place to party and just to duck into a place before midnight, wound up at a bar in a Holiday Inn.
So that got me to thinking, what are the best places NOT to be for New Year’s Eve? The WalletHub story also mentioned Atlanta at #2 and Los Angeles at #3. Hey, I live in L.A., and there’s no central public celebration, no fireworks and bars you go to on a normal basis are charging you $15-50. New Orleans, PubClub.com’s #1 destination for NYE around the world, comes in at a paltry #14.
Not to be critical, but who doing their research!?
PubClub.com’s Top 10 List Of Least Desirable New Year’s Eve Destinations
1.) Orlando. See above.
2.) Atlanta. Wet and cold weather. You’re far better off being there Jan. 8 for college football’s National Championship game.
3.) Los Angeles. This being said, L.A. is a great place to be for New Year’s Day, so if you want to be in LaLa Land, give up one for the other.
4.) Dubai. Unless you’re a millionaire, of course.
5.) Bangkok. This place is a madhouse and it’s also too spread out to find a prime party place.
6.) Maui. If you’re in Hawaii and want to party for the New Year, head instead to Waikiki Beach.
7.) Seattle. Nice city. In the summertime. But not for NYE.
8.) Vancouver. You’re much better off being in Whistler.
9.) Salt Lake City. For starters, the beer is 3.5%. If you like to ski then there’s Park City with its row of restaurants and bars but really, you can do better than this for New Year’s Eve.
10.) Miami. Okay, it’s really not one of the 10 worst but based on what your expectations of it might be, then it definitely qualifies here. There are fireworks in a big park downtown at Bayview but that’s pretty much all families and the post-midnight activity involves walking along the waterfront Bayview mall trying to find a lively bar. Now, if you manage to get onto one of those boats in the harbor, then it’s a different story.
So there you have it. And yes, there are worst destinations to be sure. I used to live in Dothan, AL, for example and trust me that’s a place you don’t want to be for NYE, or any other time of the year for that matter. But you get the idea.
If you’re curious about the WalletHub’s Top 100, here is the list.
Happy New Year!
