NYE At The Glockenspiel, A Festival & Lots Of Beer
Oktoberfest is not the only big party in Munich, Germany.
There’s also a huge city-wide celebration for New Year’s Eve with a fireworks show over Old Town. In fact, it gets a bit crazy as people set off their own fireworks, others walk around drinking out of bottles of champagne and everyone wears red underwear. Yes, red underwear on NYE is a Munich tradition, for it’s good luck for a year of big romance. Sure beats black eyed peas in the USA!
Here’s your complete Munich New Year’s Eve Party Guide, from the public party and fireworks in the Marienplatz to the city’s biggest party on the Oktoberfest site to electronic music.
The place to be for the free public spectacle is the Marienplatz, which is packed with people. There’s a lot of restaurants and bars here – including the Hofbrauhaus and a fun Irish bar – and that’s where people start partying before spilling out into the platz around the Glockenspiel.
At midnight, the fireworks show starts, and the Marienplatz and Olympic Park are two of the most popular viewing locations. The English Garden is also a great spot but you have to bring your own party because it’s a bit of a hike from the nightlife.
The biggest party is at the Oktoberfest site as part of a winter event called the Tollwood Winter Festival. There are a dozen bands; DJs playing Indie, rock, salsa, hip-hop, funk, soul, disco and reggae; circus acts; food, and, of course, Oktoberfest-sized beers! There’s electronic music at Silverstar, located on the beach, which has bands and DJs. The Muffatwerk hosts a New Year’s Eve party in the Café, the Ampere and the Muffathalle with a DJx playing hip hop, electro and fun.
Munich’s nightclubs at the Maximiliansplatz all have NYE parties. There’s techno and house at the Rote Sonne or to hip-hop at the Sweet and other club action at 089 Bar and the club Backstage.
All over Munich, there’s a party for New Year’s Eve. If you don’t know where to go, just head to the Marienplatz and you’ll have a NYE to remember. Then again, how awesome would it be to go spend NYE on the Oktoberfest site!?
