80s Punk Bands Playing on Saturday of the 24th Annual Music, Food and Singles Festival in Orange County

The past has seen Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Huey Lewis and the News, the Doobie Brothers, Styx and Pat Benatar, but now the Taste of Newport may have outdone itself. The 2012 event has Blonde AND Devo.
On the same night.
These iconic early punk bands of the 80s are touring together this September in a combined “Whip it to Shreds” tour, and the Taste of Newport is one of their stops. They are playing Saturday, Sept. 15. Just three days prior to being at the Taste of Newport, Blondie and Devo are at the Greek Theater.
The Taste of Newport, held annually in the fashionable Fashion Island parking lot, is one of Orange County’s top singles events, a mecca for meeting up and mingling, with food samplings from some of the area’s best restaurants, plus beer and booze.

Generally, the bands are an afterthought, a nice “hey look who’s playing this year” kind of thing for most single people.
Now, however, Blondie and Devo are a destination as much as the area around the mojito stand.
It also creates the interesting prospect of people going on Friday for the traditional “singles” night, then back on Saturday for this rockin’ show. Normally, Saturdays are more for families (but certainly not exclusively).
As of this blog post, the other bands for the Taste have not been announced.
