Food Network’s Merry Mixologists Mix It Up at the LA Times Travel Show
Why hasn’t this happened to me? (Yet!?)
A pair of creative, whimsical girls named Alie and Georgia decided they would do a goofy YouTube video about making a cocktail out of a McDonald’s milkshake garnished with a chicken McNugget. They called it the McNuggetini and, like the guy who ate McDonald’s for 30 days for a documentary (“Super Size Me”), it took off like the Golden Arches themselves.
Next thing they knew, they were mixologists for the Food Network.
I caught up with them at a cocktail demonstration they were giving at the Los Angeles Times Travel Show in January and noted immediately they were not afraid to mix it up (literally), at 11 o’clock on a Saturday morning.
My kind of girls.
As they made up a champagne and fruit drink as a mimosa replacement for brunch, Alie said, “the difference in brunch and breakfast is that you can drink at brunch. If you drink at breakfast, it’s kind of sad but it’s okay for brunch.”
My kind of girls.
But nobody’s perfect, right? While pulling out some Irish whiskey for a drink – did I mention it was 11 o’clock on a Saturday morning!? – Georgia did the equivalent of leaving the tap running at a keg party. She said she doesn’t like St. Patrick’s Day because “it’s just an excuse for college kids to get drunk.”
College kids, out-of-college kids, PubClubbers, business executives, even the mayor of Savannah, Ga., when I lived in that Southern city. They all get drunk on St. Patrick’s Day. So I naturally assumed that Georgia does not like any of these other days or events: Mardi Gras, Spring Break, 4th of July, Jimmy Buffett concerts, Oktoberfest, college football tailgating, days (and nights) on Paradise Beach in Greece and New Year’s Eve. Just to name a few.
But she – and her lively cocktail-making partner in crime – do like travel and food, and have combined all this into a profession, as well as a passion. Cheers to them!
You can find and follow them in all manner of ways – Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr blog and CookingChannelTV. Here’s the link to their website, alieandgeorgia.com
Or just catch them out shopping at a vintage clothing store in L.A. They love Wacko on Melrose. Somehow, that’s not too surprising.
