Models On Beaches With Few Words & No Articles
The Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue arrived in the mailbox the other day, and it was interesting to note that in its 208 pages there were pictures of 30 models in bikinis – and sometimes not in bikinis – and no text.
That’s right, not a single word of copy is in the magazine, other than an introduction letter by written by the Swimsuit Editor (yes, there is one), MJ Day (I’m not making up that name by the way).
The only text in the remaining pages is for the captions of the pictures, which also includes the photo, makeup, hair and bikini supplier credits.
It used to be that SI would dispatch one of its (male) writers to a warm destination to write about that year’s location. That had to be the most plumb assignment of the year. After all, wouldn’t you like to be plucked from, say, a basketball court in Lawrence, Kansas to a warm Caribbean island stocked full of hot models?
But now, there’s no such false pretense of the previous years, which was to provide a few summertime thoughts in between stories of mid-season basketball games in, say, Lawrence, Kansas. It’s all models and bikinis (and sometimes models in body paint and occasionally just the models). And lots of ads, of course.
The turning point in the special edition’s history was the famous Cheryl Tiegs picture in her fishnet swimsuit that took this from a looked-forward-to issue to the stratosphere status it is today.
If you’re looking for me to name a favorite model among the 30 – a “P1” to use a motorsports term – it would have to be Chrissy Teigen, specifically on page 48, a close-up shot with her playing with the string of her bikini bottom.
There’s also a very nice picture of her on page 66 in a black sort-of one-piece swimsuit.
The magazine made a few waves this year in advance of its release when it announced it was, for the first time, featuring a plus-sized model, Ashley Graham from Nebraska. In the caption to her photo on page 25, it quotes her as saying “I have cellulite, I have rolls.”
She’s certainly not petite, but few guys will notice the bottom half of her body considering her prolific top half.
There are a few Tiegs shots, as well, where one can – with no imagination – see what is being (barely) hidden under those bikini tops in the other photos.
The end is really the end, a photo of Nina Agdal standing nude on a beach, her back to the camera and the long strings of one of those girl sun hats coming out of her well-rounded cheeks.
Cheeky, wouldn’t you say?
