5 Types Of Turkey Calls To Try

February 2, 2023 by kevinwilkerson Leave a Comment

As everyone prepares for another exciting season ahead, it is the perfect time to prepare for the challenges that you will be facing. That includes getting up to speed with the calls and vocalizations that are going to bring you success.

When you are going Pennsylvania turkey hunting, for example, you will need to bring your A-Game with you and have some decent turkey calls in your repertoire.

Here are some of the most popular calls to have in your locker.

Easy to use and perfect for beginners

If you are just starting out and don’t have a lot of experience as a turkey hunter you will probably become familiar with push-button calls.

Experienced hunters can be a bit dismissive of these types of calls because they are quite simplistic. However, if they work, and the sound of a simple cluck or yelp gets your prey’s attention, there’s no need to be hung up about how easy they are to use.

This call is a must-have

Locator calls are an essential part of your turkey hunting kit.

What you have to remember is that locator calls are not intended to imitate turkey sounds. Their purpose is to find the location of a tom without giving up your own location.

This tactic allows you to get closer to the bird with some authentic sounds.

Using slate calls is a natural progression

When you are ready to move on from operating a box or push-button call your next step will often be to learn how to use slate calls.

It allows you the chance to create a variety of different sounds using a selection of slates. They are a bit more complicated to master, but you will soon get the hang of it and learn how to generate the different sounds by using the striker and different speeds and angles to vary the calls.

A hands-free calling option

The most obvious advantage attached to using a diaphragm call is that this is a mouth call option, which means your hands remain free and ready to shoot.

The technique involves blowing air upwards into the roof of your mouth. This engages the reed and allows you to generate a number of vibrations. When you learn to adjust the air pressure and position of your tongue you will discover that you will be able to imitate a wide range of turkey sounds.

Simple to use, but with endless possibilities

Box calls are universally popular with hunters, regardless of your level of expertise.

It is a device that is easy to grasp if you are a beginner but is versatile enough to satisfy the more complex demands of someone who is more experienced.

A box call is as simple or complicated to use as your skill level. If you learn to master the box call you will quickly discover that your calls are hard to ignore, making your hunting trip more likely to end in success.

The range of turkey calls available demonstrates how challenging and rewarding the sport can be. There is bound to be one that works perfectly for you on your next hunting trip, whatever your skill level.
