You couldn’t wait for your birthday when you were a kid. Nowadays, if you’re like most people, the excitement about that date begins to fade until it dies down completely. Many people have even decided to stop celebrating the day altogether.
That’s a sad state of affairs, and we’re here to fix that. It’s never time to stop commemorating another year of your life. If you follow these steps, you’ll feel a spark of energy that revives this special day as one you can’t wait to celebrate.
1. Get Creative With Food and Drinks
The easiest way to liven up a party is with an interesting food spread. How long has it been since you broke out the recipe books? When you learn a new dish, you open up all kinds of new possibilities for yourself. What’s a dish or drink you’ve always wanted to learn to make?
If you’re looking for inspiration, think about the time of year your birthday falls into, and use it as inspiration for the provisions – for example, spooky cookies in October or a warm soup in December. Also, don’t underestimate the power of visuals in inspiration. That’s what creators such as Photographer Mark Slater are here for to help.
2. Create an Atmosphere
When you don’t have a specific direction for an event you’re planning, you become aimless, which leads to apathy about it. To overcome this, zero in on one theme and build everything about the party around that theme.
To give an example, let’s say you want a casual backyard party. Start with a color scheme. Gentler colors are going to lend themselves to this well. Be liberal with the lounging places, and make sure the look is overall cozy. As a final touch, you could string up a few lights– fashionable but low effort.
3. Make Your Activities Interest Adults
This doesn’t mean you have to go for adult entertainment. It does mean you need to make sure your activities have been updated. Play to your own interests as they are now.
Talk with your friends, too. While it’s ultimately your birthday party, you can draw inspiration from what they say when you ask them what their favorite activities are. Then, you can pool all of these answers together.
4. Figure Out Your Splurge
Maybe the restaurant will be a little fancier tonight. Maybe it’s time to break out the better drinks. Maybe you want to drop everything and go on aroad trip. When was the last time you treated yourself? If you can’t do that on your birthday, we’re not sure when you can.
Now, in saying that, the splurge needs to be within reason. We would never advocate irresponsible spending. Figure out your budget and find out how much extra cash you have to spend on this occasion.
5. Find Something You Haven’t Done Before
Does it seem like you do the same thing every year? That kind of repetition can feel like a chore after a while, and that’s not how you should feel about your birthday celebration. If you’re bored of always doing the same thing, do something different.
A place you’ve never been before can be as simple as a restaurant you’ve never tried before. There’s nothing that brings your youthful spirit back more than making a new discovery. You’d be surprised at how small of a change it takes to break up the monotony.
It’s Your Party
If you’ve lost the zest in your life, you can get it back. Your birthday should never become something you dread or skip.
It’s time to stop writing yourself off as too old for the best parts of life. It’s always time for more memories.
