Flights for $99. Packed planes. Increased revenue from a rush of passengers.

It seems as if Southwest Airlines’ decision to fly to Hawaii was a good one for the airline and travelers.

But an employee from another airline that has regular service to Hawaii questioned why anyone would go to Hawaii on Southwest and added they only reason they are now is due to the low fares. He predicted it would not last.

“The only reason people are on Hawaii are because of the fares,” the 20+ -year veteran told PubClub.com. “Sure, I would do it for that price. Once.  But people aren’t going back to Southwest when the fares get to normal. I mean why would you pay, say, $350 to fly on Southwest when you can fly for about $385 on us. We’re so much more comfortable.

‘It’s a single-aisle plane on Southwest. It’s uncomfortable. There’s no food service. Sure, it’s okay for an hour flight to Vegas, San Francisco, Phoenix, and so forth. But to Hawaii!? I just don’t see it. I sure wouldn’t do it.

“I did get stuck once in Honolulu and the only way to get back to the mainland was to take another airline’s flight, and like Southwest it was a 737. It was really uncomfortable. That one-aisle plane means you can’t get up and move around, stretch your legs. You’re pretty much stuck in your seat the whole time. Getting up and go to the bathroom is a challenge.

“Plus if there’s a beverage cart, there’s no other aisle and no other bathroom you can go to, so it’s really not the best way to fly to Hawaii.

“When you go to Hawaii, you’re supposed to be in a relaxed frame of mind. You’re supposed to enjoy your trip there to get you in the Hawaiian mood. A lot of people may be going to Hawaii for the first time and being crammed onto a single-aisle plane is not the right way start off your trip. it. In my opinion.”

It is certainly an opinion worth considering, especially considering it is coming from a Hawaii travel veteran.
