Travelers Have Something Else To Worry About When Traveling
We already have security at airports, bag checks at concerts and sporting events and have to be on alert in all public places. But now, will we will be facing security scrutiny in our hotels and hotel rooms?
In the aftermath of the Las Vegas Strip shooting in which a gunman, perched with high-powered rivals in a hotel room, killed 59 people and injured more than 500 at a concert across the street, it’s another issue for the travel industry and travelers to consider.
What – if any – additional security measures hotels implement will be up to the individual properties (individually or if they are part of a chain). The Wynn Hotel and Encore in Las Vegas has begun to scan guests and gamblers with security wands and airport-style metal detector for bags as they enter the property.
Overall, most hotels will be hesitant to do too much for fear of ruining the guest experience.
As travelers, by the time we reach our hotel, we’re fed up with traveling for the day. We’re probably tired, hungry and also excited to be in a different place to get out and explore the area.
The last thing we want to deal with is a security check, being asked a lot of questions and undergoing a bag inspection. Often, checking into a hotel is a time-consuming experience and adding to that with security procedures could cause some tense travelers to snap at hotel employees.
Fairly or not, a traveler’s impression of a hotel may be tainted from the start and that may well cost the hotel business in the future.
What a more likely scenario is that hotels – particularly those in Vegas and other areas that heavily rely on tourism – will do things behind the scene to try and increase security.
They may hire more personnel or make existing ones provide more of a presence on site. They may
And they most certainly will be alerting staff to report anyone acting odd or in a suspicious manner. Maids are likely to be asked to report on anything unusual they see in a room. This is the big fault of Mandalay Bay, how the shooter was able to get 10 guns into the room and keep them there without anyone raising an eyebrow.
You can’t stop everything and people will certainly not stop traveling. But in today’s world, this is another example of how a senseless act by someone (or a group) can affect the average traveler.
