Alabama Football Trivia Answers
• What is the only SEC team to have a winning record against Bear Bryant? Alabama. Bryant coached at Kentucky, remember? He was 0-2 against the Tide, losing 21-7 in 1946 and 13-0 in 1947.
• What is Alabama’s fight song? Yeah Alabama.
• What is Alabama’s sports teams nickname? The Red Elephants.
• Why is Alabama called the Crimson Tide? At the Rose Bowl in 1925 – the game that established the championship traditon that is Alabama football – the under-rated team defeated what the national media thought was the invincible Washington Huskies. Afterward a sports writer, alluding to Alabama’s jersey colors, wrote that “mighty Washington was washed away by a powerful crimson tide.” And that became the school’s unofficial nickname. Frankly, it’s way better than the Red Elephants anyway.

• Why is the band called the Million Dollar Band? Once again, credit sportswriters. In the mid-50s the football team was really bad and when the band took the field for a halftime show one game, a sportwriter in the press box said to another, “well at least the band looks like a million dollars.” This writer, by the way, was a member of the Million Dollar Band. (Alto sax, if you’re curious.)
• What position did Bart Star play at Alabama? Punter! He also played some quarterback but was the team’s punter. He also rode the bench his senior year because the coach at the time, “Ears” Whitworth, did nolt believe in playing seniors. He was replaced the next year by Bear Bryant. He did go on to have success as a solid defensive coordinator at Georgia.
• When did Big Al become Alabama’s mascot? Big Al became Alabama’s mascot in 1979. The students were asked to name the mascot and it made its debut as one of the most memorable games in Alabama football history, the 14-7 win over Penn State in the Sugar Bowl that enabled the Tide to win the National Championship.
• When was the last time Alabama played a home game at Legion Field in Birmingham? It was Aug. 30, 2003 against South Florida. From that point forward, all of Alabama’s home games have been played in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
• What is Alabama’s longest winning streak? 28 and it’s happened twice and neither involved Nick Saban. The first was under Bear Bryant from 1978 until mid-season 1980. The second was under Gene Stallings from 1991-1993. Bryant won back-to-back National Championships in that time and Stallings won one.
• What was Alabama’s longest winning streak under Nick Saban? 20 games in 2015 and 2016, which included the 2015 National Championship.
• Kalen DeBoer came to Alabama from Washington. What are Alabama’s other connections to that school? In addition to the 1925 Rose Bowl, Nick Saban played for and eventually got his first job under Don James, who went on to become the long-time coach of the Huskies.
• How many times did Nick Saban throw his headseat to the ground at Alabama? Unknown
