Actually, the answer is the same whether your boyfriend or husband, or girlfriend or wife, sleeps with somebody else.

When this happens, after you’ve had your initial confrontation, then drop it. Move on and never talk with him (or her) again. Don’t call, don’t leave text messages and worst of all, don’t be out with your girlfriends and after a few drinks text him and say something like “she’s fat and not as good looking as me.”

Don’t return any of his texts or calls, either, because he will surely try and contact you.

Believe me, you are making it rough on him by not responding. It may not be so much that he wants to get back together, but men are competitive and want to win. If you give in then he wins; if you dump and then ignore him, then it will drive him crazy because he can’t get the upper hand.

If this infidelity happens around the presence of others – say, at a party – then don’t yell at him, don’t cause a scene, don’t dump a drink on his head. Simply walk away. And then ignore him.

The reason behind this strategy is simple: when someone cheats on you, they have violated the trust in your relationship, and no matter how hard you try to put this behind you, you’ll never be able to regain that trust.

How can you possibly look that same person in the eyes and have the same feelings toward them after such an act? No matter what happens moving forward – “oh, it was a one-time thing,” and “it will never happen again” – can you really feel the same passion as before the incident? If you are being honest with yourself, the answer is no.

Also, by sleeping with someone else, that person has demonstrated they have little to no respect for you. And if they have no respect for you, then do you really want to be with that person?

Furthermore, if he/she does this once, then it’s bound to happen again.  A friend has a very good saying about one’s character: you can’t change the spots on a leopard.

So while it may be painful to break off things, you’ll be way better off in the long run for doing it. And that person actually did you a favor by showing his (or hers) true colors.
