King Harbor Hotel Now Looking At Late Summer Debut
Just when it looked as if Shade Hotel in Redondo Beach, CA, were ready to swing open its doors late this spring, a water leak has delayed the project until at least late summer.
Here’s what happened according to a press release: “Following a routine testing of the plumbing system late last week (March 18), a pipe burst over the weekend at the waterfront Shade Hotel in development in Redondo Beach, Calif., damaging more than half of the property’s luxurious guest rooms and suites.
“A good Samaritan from the area’s notable boating community saw the water running from the property and alerted officials, prompting the Redondo Beach Fire Department to shut off the main water supply to the property.
“The boutique hotel, at the forefront of the massive Redondo Beach Waterfront Revitalization project, was expected to open this spring, with crews working extended hours in an effort to be ready for the busy summer tourist season. With damage to insulation, drywall, flooring, bathroom tile, wallcovering and electrical fixtures, it is now expected that the hotel will not open until late summer.”
Canceled Reservations & Events
Needless to say, this was like a punch in the gut to owner – and South Bay local – Mike Zislas. From his words, you could almost feel his heart sink when he got the news.
“It is nothing short of heartbreaking,” said Zislis, whose title is actually president of Manhattan Beach-based Zislis Group which operates Shade Hotels.
“The team has been working so hard to open before summer, and guests and groups have been enthusiastically planning vacations, meetings and social events at the property. Sadly, this will have quite an impact on many, but we are more determined than ever to introduce this landmark property to the Redondo Beach community.”
Zislis and his team must not only make repairs, but they also have to tell guests who had already booked reservations and events that the hotel now cannot accommodate them.
“There is nothing like having to call a mother to tell her that her child’s Bat Mitzvah venue will not be ready,” said Zislis.
“However, we are working diligently to relocate some business to Shade Manhattan Beach, and offering incentives to individuals and groups who can postpone their visits. We will refund 100 percent of deposits and our team of wedding and event specialists will assist groups in every way possible.”
Delayed, too, are the opening of the bars at Shade, which promised to give a needed summertime lift to Redondo Beach nightlife.
