Doing Shots Is Commonplace In Greece Bars As Well As In Hotels & Even Shops
If you travel to the Greek Islands and are single, young (or just young at heart) and like to party, then one thing becomes readily apparent: the national symbol of Greece is the shot glass.
The shot glasses are everywhere. like the Alps are in Switzerland.
Let me put it this way: you’ll see far more bottoms of shot glasses than you will ruins.
That’s because the Greeks are such hospitable hosts, they like to share their “opa!,” mentality with everyone who visits what they call “the old country.” Everywhere you go in the islands, people are drinking shots and some bars even has a long list of them posted on the walls.
They go by names like “Brain Eraser” (I tried it once and it did), and the bartender, bar manager or even the bar owner (this could be one in the same) often just puts down shot glasses in front of you and does a shot with you.
It’s not even out of the ordinary to have your hotel clerk pull down a bottle from a shelf behind the check-in desk and doing a shot or two with you before giving you your room key.
I once even had a guy in a jewelry shop go up in the attic to get “Rocky,” when I showed him my new Nike watch and promised to give him a contact at the company so he could possibly get some in stock. “Rocky” turned out to be a clear bottle of some kind and we did shots right there in the store!
Pretty soon, you pick up this routine and wind up doing shots with your friends, your new friends and with new friends you’re making in the bar next to you. It’s just part of being in, and partying on, the Greek Islands. This adds to the already lively nightlife in Greece. which is why it’s one of the world’s greatest party destinations.
And one big tip here. When you do these shots in Greece, just be aware of one thing: don’t do ouzo.
