It’s New Year’s Eve and you want to do something different. Out of the ordinary.

That could be what you wear, what you eat or what you drink.

For the latter, here’s one suggestion. It’s a gin-based drink that – get this – includes wine.

Yes, wine.

It’s called the Bloody Shiraz and it starts with Four Pillars gin paired with Shiraz grapes from Australia. You can drink this as it’s packaged or add to it by combining a few other ingredients to make the Bloody Shiraz Cocktail. Here’s the recipe.

Bloody Shiraz Cocktail Recipe

• 50mL Four Pillars Bloody Shiraz Gin
• 10mL sweet vermouth
• 10mL sugar syrup
• 25mL fresh lime juice
• Ginger beer
• Half a lime for garnish

This will certainly set you apart on New Year’s Eve.

The idea of combining gin with wine grapes came about in a pretty simple manner. Four Pillars distiller Cameron Mackenzie was thinking one day, “what would happen if you combined Four Pillars Gin with some of the best Shiraz grapes in Australia?”

He tried it, he liked it and so did a lot of other people, apparently.

In 2017, the company released its third – and largest – vintage. This is a very limited drink, and has just become available in the USA, exclusively in Los Angeles.

The Bloody Shiraz has a vibrant ruby color with true Yarra Valley (Australia) Shiraz characters: earthiness, complexity and subtle white pepper spice – while still being within that balanced sweetness of the previous releases.

Aromatically it shows fresh pine needles, citrus and spice, and distinct peppery, dense raspberry notes. The palate is sweet with a juniper and spice character finish.

Unlike Sloe Gin (which is less than 30% ABV), the alcohol is 37.8%. So it packs a punch alone or mixed; you can also use it to make a unique Bloody Mary for New Year’s Day.
