Easter Eggs Replaced By Kegs At This Unique & Fun Party Event
The first time I heard of the El Segundo Keg Hunt, I said “well that sounds fun, but what the heck is it?”
After witnessing the first moments of my first one, I said, “oh man this is really fun, but what the heck is it!?”
A few hundred people were partying in a parking lot – the the 2018 Keg Hunt is Saturday, March 31 in 2018, by the way– all dressed in team themed costumes (this seems to be a speciality of events here in the South Bay Beach Cities of Los Angeles) but I could find no correlation to Easter eggs or, other than consuming them, to kegs.
Eventually those people broke off into groups with a few teams going to various bars in El Segundo, one after another. Once in a bar, they would rush up to some type of setup, play a game and race out the door.
As a PubClub.com reporter, I attempted to follow a few but realized that was pointless. I decided to “toss out the anchor” as Jimmy Buffett describes it when you stay put and observe what was happening in front of me.
Here’s the El Segundo Keg Hunt in a nutshell: Organize a team of four people, dress in a creative teamed-theme costume, meet in the parking lot of Tavern on Main to load up drinks and then fan out to the designated dozen or so bars.
Once there, teams play games to get clues to find kegs, then head to the next bar you’ve been assigned, play one of the game set up at that bar (drink, repeat of course), get a clue and keep going until they’ve figured out where a keg is hidden in town.
Personally, I’ve never been very good at these clue games, and neither are apparently a lot of people on the keg hunt, because this really becomes kind a random bar crawl. “Hey this one’s happening” you say when walking in one, then you stay and party.
Occasionally, as you’re moving from bar to bar you run into a group carrying an empty keg, and a few kegs start appearing in the bars. Apparently, each bar is assigned a keg and those who find it take it to that bar.
I say apparently because by that time, I’ve kind of lost track of things and don’t care about finding a keg. I want to party and this is a good party!
And that it in a, well, not nutshell, but keg shell?
