When LA Weather Becomes Like Portland

Instead of the typical 70 and sunny, it showed the following: “cloudy, AM rain, PM rain, AM showers, cloudy, mostly cloudy. Only one day did it show “sunny.”
One of out 10!? In Southern California??
Well that’s what you get in the land of sunshine in the winter. It seems, right after the bathed-in-sunshine Rose Bowl, the area becomes as gray and wet as Portland. It does rain in Southern California, just not in the summertime.
Fortunately, these storms don’t last long. If you happening to be traveling to Los Angeles or anywhere in Southern California and it’s raining, don’t fret and think it’s going to ruin your vacation. They usually pass within a few hours or half a day.
Occasionally in the winter, there are all-day storms but hang tight for when they pass, they are followed by sunshine and clear, blue skies. It’s unusual that the forecast calls for so many wet and gray days, which is what had me so depressed about the weather. That just doesn’t happen very often here.
This does cause travel problems between LA and San Francisco on I-5. There’a stretch of road just north of Los Angels called The Grapevine that goes over a mountain. When it’s raining in LA, it’s snowing on The Grapevine and that stretch of road is often closed during winter storms.
Ad if if you’re driving between LA and Vegas, high desert winds can cause huge delays on the part of I-15 called the El Cajon Pass. This is a traffic-heavy area anyway and sometimes the winds are so strong, 18-wheelers are blown on their side.
Flights, too, can be affected by these heavy winds.
Along the coastal areas, those winds can be fierce with the sand blowing so hard it pierces the skin. And it’s cold. So don’t dare coming here without a thick sweatshirt or coat.
It’s not always a weather paradise in Los Angeles and Southern California. At least in the wintertime.
Cheers!
