5 Must-Have Experiences for a Tourist in the UK

Discovering  secrets and hidden attractions can be fun, but there is a special kind of joy that comes from being all ‘touristy’ when exploring a new country.

That’s definitely the case when visiting the UK as this country has several sites that have long become ‘classics’ among the tourists. Each of them is a symbol of the country and its culture in a different way. Experiencing them is a must for every traveler because these are the activities and places that will show you the traditional part of Britain and enable you to better understand its culture.

  1. Hike in the Scottish Highlands

The beauty of Scotland is impossible to describe. Many poets tried their best to do this, but even the power of Robert Burns’ talent cannot fully translate the magnificence of this scenery onto paper. Therefore, whenever you are in Scotland, don a pair of hiking boots and set out exploring the heather-covered countryside. No matter where you go, the view is sure to be breathtaking. But make sure you visit some lakes and cliffs to get a complete picture of this stunning beauty.

If possible, plan your trip to make it to Scotland for the Burns Night’s supper. It’s a beautiful celebration of one of Scotland’s most valued sons. In case you can’t make it, at least try haggis while reading Burns’ poetry.

  1. Crawl the pubs

British pubs are legendary and a pub crawl is a time-honored tradition in the country. For the most authentic yet diverse modern experience, you should go to London and enjoy a pub crawl in Camden. This part of the city is packed with pub and bars that range from the classic dingy places you can see in old movies to sleek and modernistic spaces that serve crazy fruity cocktails.

But remember, a pub crawl is an experience that you should never try on your own. Either go with friends who know the area or join an organized group.

  1. Follow the Arthurian legends through Wales

There is some evidence that the legendary King Arthur was Welsh and you can find multiple sites associated with stories about him all around Wales. Following those trails is fun and allows you to immerse yourself into a precious part of Britain’s cultural heritage.

Dressing up as knights and ladies of old and taking a ton of pictures is a must for your trip to Wales. While there, you should also explore old castles and ruins. Some of the best sites in Britain are located in this part of the country. Not all of them are connected to the Legend of King Arthur, but all of them are beautiful.

  1. See a Shakespeare play

The United Kingdom houses some of the best theaters in the world and British actors are incredibly talented. That’s probably because play is an important part of the country’s cultural heritage. Being the birthplace of the most famous playwright in history helped cement the role of theater in the hearts of Brits.

Seeing at least one Shakespeare play during your trip to Britain is a must. It will be best to enjoy it in the Globe Theater or the poet’s hometown of Stratford-Upon-Avon. However, you can find plays all over the country, so you can enjoy the experience even while on a tight budget.

  1. Follow the footsteps of giants

A visit to Northern Ireland’s most outstanding natural site is another must-do thing for a trip to the UK. If one believes the legends, the basalt columns of Giant’s Causeway are remains of giants’ footsteps. This might not be the exact truth, but the place is a geological marvel. It’s open to everyone, so you can wander around and try to come up with your own explanations to the origins of columns.
