Top Locations Include The HB Pier, La La Land Movie Locations And Sunsets
Why let Los Angeles and the Hollywood sign get all the attention when it comes to Instagrammable places around the city when there are plenty of great social media posts available in Hermosa Beach?
This beach community, in what is called L.A.’s South Bay, is the centerpiece of the Southern California laid-back lifestyle and it has several locations that are great for selfies and Instagram posts.
PubClub.com has picked out our Top 10 most Instagrammable places in Hermosa Beach.
1.) The Hermosa Beach Pier
Every beach town in California has a pier and they are the focal point of activity. In Hermosa, this one was featured in the movie La La Land and it stretches out beyond the wide beach with surfers catching waves in the Pacific Ocean to the left and to the right. There are lots of Southern California lifestyle Instagram spots on the Hermosa Beach Pier.
2.) The Strand
The lifeline of activity in Hermosa is the two-lane concrete walking/running/bicycling path that runs parallel to the ocean. It’s called The Strand. All along its two-mile stretch in Hermosa are countless Instagrammable moments, from people playing on the beach to palm trees framed by the sunlight to the constant parade of people moving north to south on The Strand.
3.) The 90210 House
This is the Hollywood-famous landmark in the Beach Cities, the very house where the TV show was filmed in the 90s. It was also used in the Dan Aykroyd and Kim Bassinger movie My Stepmother’s An Alien. From a photo standpoint, is to the South Bay what the Hollywood sign is to L.A. It is located at the very north end of The Strand at 35th Street.
4.) The Beach Volleyball Courts
Beach volleyball is king in Hermosa and the sport is constantly being played here, from amateur and professional tournaments to goofy events like Smackfest (keep reading), nightly classes and both casual and intense games among friends. Every single block in Hermosa has nets on the sand, providing for some really good action lifestyle posts. You may even see an Olympic gold medalist hitting balls: Kerry Walsh-Jennings might be at 21st Street, her long-time partner April Ross at 2nd Street and Phil Dalhausser frequently practices at 8th Street.
5.) Surf’s Up!
Hermosa doesn’t get the swells of El Porto or the big “left” as does the Malibu Pier, but there are always surfers in the Pacific Ocean. Two great places to see them are from the pier and at the south end of the beach in front of the Chart House on the Hermosa/Redondo border. 6.) The Sunsets
Southern California has some of the world’s most spectacular sunsets, and you can get a year’s worth of sunset photos to post all along The Strand.
7.) La La Land Movie Locations
You don’t have to be in Hollywood to get photos of famous movie locations. Parts of La La Land were filmed in Hermosa. The most recognizable locations are the pier and inside the Lighthouse Cafe, the one-time famous jazz club on Pier Plaza that still has live music today with bands playing every night.
8.) Pier Plaza
This is bar central of Hermosa Beach and while its surfing and beach volleyball by day for locals, it’s Pier Plaza by night. Get your fun party photos in places like Tower 12, Sharkeez, American Junkie, Patrick Molloy’s and Waterman’s Safe House.
9.) The Murals
Hermosa Beach has some spectacular public artwork on its buildings. There’s a big trumpet that seems to be coming out of the wall on 10th Street and Hermosa Ave., (a nod to it’s jazz club heritage), a surf and beach lifestyle painting on the side of a liquor store at 14th Street and Hermosa Ave., and the large mural on the wall of Playa Hermosa tells the story of the history of the city.
10.) The Events
There are events happening all the time in Hermosa. In the spring and summer, there are beach volleyball tournaments nearly every weekend – the colorful and crazy Smackfest is July 13 and the AVP pros are in town July 26-28 – the summer concert series is every Sunday in August and there are various groups doing pub crawls in the bar on a regular basis.
