Camping & Top Things To Do In Two Harbors

It is 26 miles across the sea and Catalina Island is waiting for me.

That lyric from a cute 50s song from the Four Preps is about Santa Catalina, an island off the Los Angeles coast that is “a tropical heaven out in the ocean” to borrow another lyric from that song.

And PubClub.com returns to the island for a three-day trip that explores the area’s hidden paradise, a small cove known as Two Harbors.

Far away from the more robust Avalon, Two Harbors is a quiet (except during Buccaneer Days!) and remote area in the middle section of the island. It has none of the shops, restaurants, bars and tourists as does Avalon. But what it does have is peaceful beauty, a snug harbor, rugged hills great for hiking and mountain biking,  a bar serving the best Buffalo Milk cocktails on the island where you can dance under the stars on a wooden deck, and is a favorite destination for sailboat skippers.

PubClub is reporting on all the activities on Two Harbors: snorkeling, kayaking, attempting stand-up paddling, and, well, drinking Buffalo Milks while sitting on the beach and dancing under the stars on the deck of the Harbor Reef.

The Harbor Reef is the lone bar and restaurant and it has a lunch place with sandwiches and burgers and a very nice restaurant for dinner. The bar is the gathering place for those who are in Two Harbors.

Accommodations are limited, the only “hotel” being the 12-room Banning House. Most skippers stay on their boat but Two Harbors is also a haven for campers with campsites and a camping “hut,” which is serving as PubClub’s accommodations.

The terrain is somewhat rugged in that there are hardly any buildings other than the Harbor Reef, the Banning House, the showers/restrooms and a few tiny houses for the handful of residents.

What’s the attraction, you ask? It’s the opportunity to live the simple life, to put the rest of the world away for a while. Once you’re in Two Harbors, it doesn’t take long for you to realize that those office e-mails aren’t really that important anyway.

I am reporting on Two Harbors for both this site as well as ManTripping.com.
