A lot of Dubliners probably did not intend on having a Dry January, but many are experiencing one, anyway.

Certainly if they are hoping to get a pint from a pub.

That’s because it’s impossible to get a beer at a Dublin pub.

If that sounds impossible considering how much having a pint in a pub is part of the Irish lifestyle, it’s the today’s reality. Irish Prime Minister – the Taoiseach in Irish-speak – Michael Martin has not only ordered the pubs to close for indoor drinking but has also imposed a ban on to-go beers.

“Forget about takeaway pints,” he said in a televised interview.

Pubs can deliver beers and food to people in their homes and apartments, but getting to-go brews is a no-go in Ireland.

The Irish Times reported that in the city centre of Dublin on a Saturday night that it was impossible to get a beer at a pub. The pubs are following the Taoiseach’s orders and even if they were not, breweries are simply not delivering beer to them. Needless to say, it’s hard to serve beers when you’re not getting any beer.

“He (Martin) came out very strong about it the other evening on the television,” Mark Grainger of Granger’s Hanlon Corner in Dublin said to the Times, “and he said no more takeaway pints. He was very dogged about it.

“He could have been a bit nicer about it.”
