Anxious To Travel, I Will Instead Be Traveling Around Here In San Diego

A ‘Staycation’ In One Of The World’s Top Tourist Destinations

I want to travel.

Get on a plane and go somewhere. See different sights, eat in new (to me) restaurants, drink in different bars – or outside of them if it’s outdoor only – than my familiar eating and watering holes.

But instead of boarding a plane, I will be boarding my bicycle.

And the trolley, the city’s excellent bus system and even the Coaster.

You see, I live in San Diego and San Diego is one of the world’s best travel destinations. I have only explored a small part of this area in the year and a half I have lived here and it’s time to get out and get to know my city.

So while I can’t really travel anywhere, I can travel a lot locally. And I can guarantee that a lot of people would like to be traveling now in and around sunny San Diego.

The industry buzzword for this is “staycation” but frankly, I tend to dislike buzzwords. They are too trendy, which means they are hot terms until it they worn out by overuse.

I don’t really have a term for it, but that’s not important. What’s important is the journey.

For instance, I am anxious to see Silver Strand Beach south of Coronado. Go in search of that famous Mexican restaurant that makes its own tortillas in El Cajon that I have seen on local news for feature stories.

I will go to the Cabrillo tide pools and lighthouse on Point Loma. See a sunset on Sunset Cliffs.

Check out a bike path through Mission Bay that I have just heard about from a bicycling friend. See if I can find my way on a bike from the Solana Beach train station through Del Mar, Torrey Pines, to La Jolla and eventually to the beach bike path in Pacific and Mission Beach.

Go with a friend to the local mountains and other friends to local wineries for wine tasting.

Discover what – if anything – is east of the 5 freeway. (When I lived in the Beach Cities of Los Angeles prior to moving to San Diego, it was an unwritten locals’ mantra that their is no reason to go east of the main north-south freeway, the 405. I have been told that is not the case with the north/south freeway, the 5, in San Diego.)

Plus, who knows what else I might find in my local travels.

One part of my plan is getting on the trolley, riding it to the end and getting off at the various towns along the way. That, in itself, will be like going to several different destinations without having to get on a plane.
