A Combination Of Great Cocktails And Good Food Make This Place A Standout Restaurant
By Kevin Wilkerson, PubClub San Diego Blogger
Okay, where to I start? Oh, I know I’ll make it with the cocktails. Because I’m PubClub, right!?
The bar manager, who is also a trained bartender and knowing I was there for PubClub.com kind of overdid things when I mentioned I would like to try ” a couple of cocktails,” brought out four of them. And this was in addition to making a drink of my own creation to try out its Ox Coffee Roasters java, rum and Baileys in the Cup of Joe which I have dubbed The PubClub.com Caribbean Coffee. It’s my take on the Irish Coffee (I prefer rum to whiskey).
Anyway, the Caribbean Coffee was excellent and so, too, was the Espresso Martini, which creatively came with two toasted marshmallows on it. He also brought out a glass of prosecco – “because we sell a LOT of it,” he said – the Whiskey Sunny Side up that is served with a very crispy bacon slice on the rim (hey I stated earlier that I prefer rum to whiskey, not that I don’t drink whiskey, haha) and the Pink Bubble.
The latter was the most interesting of all. It’s called the Pink Bubble because the server uses something that looks like a long candle lighter and uses it to create a pink bubble over the top of the drink. It contains strawberry, vanilla tonic and lime juice and can be made with vodka or tequila. I chose tequila. This folks, is a standout item on the menu. It is a well-balanced cocktail and the tequila and citrus perfectly complement each other. It’s so good that it’s worth going in there just for it.

I drank every one of the cocktails, by the way. It took a while, a couple of hours, but I sipped them and took frequent sips (well, gulps) of water. This was not a problem because 6th & G is a comfortable place to be for a while. The decor reminds me of one of those Vegas breakfast places but 6th & G is a lot smaller and thus not as loud and busy. On a weekday, anyway.

Plus, I had some delicious food to keep from tooo buzzed. As it was early afternoon, my friend and I passed on breakfast – I had already previously done a 6th & G food review on some of those menu items – so he got the burger and I the Grilled Birria Sandwich. The burger was actually two smashed patties with jalapeno bacon and garlic aioli (man, this place sure is creative with its food!) as two ingredients and it definitely was tasty.
What I immediately discovered is that the Grilled Birria Sandwich it to the food menu what the Pink Bubble is to the drink menu. The meat is good enough but it’s the sauce that takes it to an “oh, WOW” level.
In fact, that’s my conclusion. You can go to 6th & G Breakfast Co., for many things but those two items are what sets it apart from many other places.
