The increasing popularity of motorized personal transportation – and the actions of those using on them while on The Strand – has got the attention of the Hermosa Beach Department.

As a result, the HBPD is cracking down on violators and people on electric scooters and e-bikes in particular.

It has long been illegal to have any kind of motorized transportation on The Strand, which is why beach cruisers have long been so prominent among locals. The speed limit is also 8 mph.

Here is a press release on the subject from the HBPD:

With the sharp rise in popularity of electric bicycles, scooters, and similar devices, Officers and residents have noticed an increasingly dangerous situation as riders disregard the posted speed limits and related laws. The Hermosa Beach Police Department has deployed several Traffic Officers over the past month to provide additional enforcement on The Strand, bike path, and surrounding areas.

As a result of the enforcement actions, Officers issued approximately 52 citations. Violations include, but are not limited to, riding without a helmet, failing to stop at posted stop signs, riding through a walk zone, yielding to pedestrians, parking a wheeled device that obstructs pedestrian or vehicle traffic, and speeding. As a reminder, The Strand has a posted speed limit of 8 mph.

With summer approaching, many people are now enjoying outdoor activities and electric powered wheeled devices. Electric bicycles (E-bikes) and scooters can reach speeds in excess of 28 mph and are not permitted on The Strand (unless propelled by human power). Residents and visitors are encouraged to educate themselves on the laws and safety guidelines for these types of devices.

The Hermosa Beach Police Department will continue enforcement to ensure that The Strand, bike path, and roadways are safe for everyone. Residents and visitors are encouraged to check the City of Hermosa Beach website for laws, municipal codes, and additional information.

E-bikes are not allowed on The Strand. In fact, anything with a motor is not allowed on The Strand. You can, however, ride it on the streets. If everyone would ride at less than 8 MPH then perhaps it wouldn’t be illegal. But not everyone would do it.

Am I allowed to ride my E-bike on the stand of Hermosa Beach if I have injuries to my knees and I can only ride a pedal assist E-bike and not manual bikes.
I’m not going faster than 8 MPH and I obey all laws. I notice a sign at the entrance of Hermosa Beach saying “no electric bikes, scooters….” on strand. Doe’s this apply to me? If it doe’s, wouldn’t this be discriminating to handicap people?
